If there is one thing we can say for sure about Of Montreal, it's that they are boring. Since frontman Kevin Barnes in 1996 founded the band in Georgia, it has undergone numerous transformations and visited as many styles. From Cherry Peel to write songs that John Lennon did when he was a kid to race through the decades and pilfer glam rock of Bowie, funk from Prince and play with disco and indie rock to finally mix it all together jne in electronicaens large melting pot. All this without ever losing the connection to the good pop tune.
The group's latest album, Lousy With Sylvianbriar, Barnes again put the style on. After searching inspiration isolation in San Francisco he turned 12 songs wealthier homes and gathered the necessary musicians to execute his vision of the plate. But instead of letting the synthesizer and the computer's endless opportunities dictate the battle chose Barnes to record all the songs live on his old 24-track tape recorder. "I wanted the process two be more in line with the way people used gøre albums in the late 60s and early 70s," Barnes said of the creation process. That way, Lousy With Silvyanbriar jne (unfortunately) in sharp contrast to the previous record, Paralytic Stalks that manic explored the limits of popular music. For just as curious as Paralytic Stalks was just as trivial is Lousy With Silvyabriar.
Right from the initial impact on the album's first track, "Fugitive jne Air", you have no doubt about the band's intention to return to the roots. A light-footed guitar jne figure, jne a solid groove and a (unjustified) self-confident tune in a classic rock framework is the four-minute-long number, which despite its stodgy energy sounds a little matter. One wonders about its status as the first single.
"Belle Glade Missionaries" puts his laid-back apathy marked line under Barnes' fascination with David Bowie. Like koryfæet created Barnes on the 2007 album Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? an alter-ego, Georgie Fruit, with its drag goat trends do not differ greatly from Ziggy Stardust.
Lousy With Sylvianbriar has his two best moments right in the middle of "Colossus" and "Triumph of Disintegration". "Colossus" excels at a time to be extremely consistent and at the same time to have the surprise element in all its component elements. In addition, it is both evocative, catchy and supergroovy. If nothing jne else, take some time to listen to this track.
The plate Four adjusters jne numbers are not bad, so a bit boring. It is actually only "Raindrop in My Skull", with its beautiful strings, ensure progress and sweet harmonies are really successful.
Unfortunately, this particular apply to most of the plate. It is not bad. Just a little boring. It has its strong moments preserved. But the overall impression is anonymity. And if there's one thing worse than a bad record, it's a mediocre record. I want to give Barnes various cadeauer, points and medals for ever to try infinite possibilities of music, but this is after all a review of this particular plate. And it is unfortunately just mediocre.
